Comment:

I'm connected via DSL & I've noticed that the IP address shown in Zonealarm is different to that shown in the 'Local Connection Area Status' dialogue box, it's also different to whats showing up in Neotrace & Gamespy arcade etc. I had a dialer virus recently but killed it and my virus software says I'm clean, has anyone got any ideas?

Also, can anyone recommend a good free alternative to Neotrace & Visualzone - I know you get what you pay for but free would be best :)

Thanks.

Are you behind a NAT router (including one that your DSL modem might have)?

If you are, your IP address will start with 10, 172 or 192. This IP address is the one that will show up in the Local Area Connection dialog box, and it's the one that either the router's DHCP has given you or the one that you have set up for yourself (static IP address). If the other IP address that you see does not start with 10, 172 or 192, it is the one that has been assigned to you by your ISP, and it is the one other computers on the Internet see. This is perfectly normal, and it isn't caused by a virus.

As for your other question, sorry, I don't even know what you're referring to. :p

You will probably find it is related to the fact that there are not enough IP addresses to go round as the current IP addressing called IPv4 is based on a 32 bit number. There is a proposal to change to IPv6 which has a 128 bit address.

Basically you log on and are given a temporary IP address for that session until you log off.

If you want a static IP address you will have to contact your ISP and tell them you need it for FTP.
