'Full' can be installed on any system. No prior version of windows is needed.
'Upgrade' needs proof of ownership of a prior windows version.
'Academic' is 'probably' issued to schools.

It will ask you to put in a prior copy of Windows, and you simply put a Windows cd in cd rom, it checks i t, then you put back upgrade and off you go!

Academic versions are available to anyone connected to education - teacher or student - even having a school aged child in the family is allowed (in the UK at least, dont know if it's different in Australia) - also don't know how they verify that a pupil is at a school/college though. Can't imagine they phone up & check every one?
