I received a Security bulletin from Microsoft that advised an update (833182). But the download site advises that it is for Win XP Gold. Now what is this version of XP ? I have only heard of Home and Professional editions. Can I apply the update to my version of XP Professional or will I end up crashing my system ?
Thanks in advance..
Jo

Microsoft does not mail update bulletin..If you run where angels fear to tread you are going to be in deep doodoo.Delete the message and any other like that in the future

Sabertooth is correct - whatever u do, don't open/run any attachment that came with the mail - it's a virus.

Sabertooth:
Generally speaking, it is best these days to stay away from items in your email-box allegedly claiming to be from Microsoft.
However, I've been receiving legitimate update bulletins from MS for over a year. In fact, I received one much like Jo Neri did this morning from the following address:
Microsoft <0_53618_1BCC2314-1818-BF40-9F71-AB800AD3B4E1_US@Newsletters.Microsoft.com>
Because of all the fake Microsoft bulletins going around, I usually don't open them anymore, just delete and go to the MS site to check if updates do exist.
Thanks, Solarian

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the advice but the bulletin and not an attachment was from Microsoft but you guys have missed the point. I asked for advice on what the difference between Win XP Gold and Win XP Professional is and whether the security update for the Gold version is applicable for XP Prof also.Regards
Jo

Jo Neri:
The following URL will give you a thumbnail sketch about XP Gold (sorry I don't have more info):
http://www.piquest.com/filequest.htm
Solarian

That's a file manager of some sort Solarian - the only details I could find about 'Windows XP Gold' is here:
http://more.abcnews.go.com/sections/scitech/DailyNews/techtv_windowsxp010824.htmlbut I don't know how old (year) that page is - certainly I've never heard of it !!
My advice - don't install it !!

Solarian
Thanks but the site you ref to is for some other software (filequest Gold)
Look the security bulletin i am ref ti is at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-041.asp and is the latest critical update for a vulnerability through Remote Code Execution and Microsoft advices immediate application but in the affected software this is mentioned:-
Affected Software:
.....
.....
.....Microsoft Windows XP Gold, Service Pack 1 - Download the patch
.....
So once again what is Windows XP Gold ? Do you have this version ?Regards,
Jo

The url you gave is old and the security bulletin is 16 Oct 03. But I guess I shall wait until I get clear info on the subject before updating.
Thanks guys
Jo

Jo Neri:
In your original post, you asked:
Can I apply the update to my version of XP Professional or will I end up crashing my system ?
I've never had a problem going to the Microsoft site (www.microsoft.com), clicking on Windows Update, and letting their computers hook up to mine to find out what updates I need. I install everything for my operating system directly from the MS site.
It's a safe, sure thing. 8-)
Solarian

Solarain,
Thanks I will wait a few days till I am sure of the Gold version. I've just reloaded XP and all the updates and its been a pain so I do not intend messing with my system unless I sure that the upgrade will be aply to Win XP Professional
Thanks all the same
Jo

Jo Neri:
I've been through a few OS re-installs and all the updates which must follow myself.
I don't blame ya--I know the pain. 8-)
Solarian

Gold is a development term for final version.
I suspect the referance is for the Beta/Alpha/Gold testers of XP.

As far as I know the development process goes like this:
Betas 1 and 2 == not public
Release Candidates 1 and 2 == time-limited trial versions that people can signup to receive
Gold == the official release which is probably the version on store shelves
XP with Service pack 1
...
XP with Service pack NVersions of XP with service packs already installed may eventually be sold as CDs.

Finally this "bling bling issue" goes to rest now that we know where and what the heck the gold is all about....Gr8

Cyberslug,
Thanks for your explanation It seems to be the most reasonable. I wonder if you have visited the microsoft security bulletin site http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-041.aspDo you think I can apply the patch to my XP Professional ?
Jo

Jo,
I had the same question as you because I got the same Microsoft Security Notification Service e-mail notice. (I signed up with Microsoft for the security notices). MSFT cannot seem to use a consistent naming convention for versions of Windows, and to be sent a notice about XP Gold is even more confusing and frustrating. The Oct 29 summary bulletin, which underwent a “major revision increment” still refers to XP Gold.
I ended up installing the updates that the “Windows Update” feature in the system tray said I needed.
My version of XP has at least six different variations on the version ID, depending on where you look. I realize that some of this is a holdover from how Win XP evolved, but 6 different variations seems extreme:
1. Win XP Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633:Service Pack(1) {Per Safe Mode screen 2003/10}
2. Windows NT 5.1 Build 2600 per error report contents that MSFT created to be sent to MSFT re a MS Word crash when canceling out of a modify styles operation {2003/09/22}
3. XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 1 {Per System Properties 2003/09/22}
4. OS Name is XP Pro. Version is 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600 {Per System Information 2003/10/15}
5. Win XP Version 5.1.2600 [No mention of "Pro"] {Per Cmd prompt | ver 2003/10/15}
6. Win Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633: Service Pack 1) [The title bar says WinXP Pro] {Per Start | Run | winver}
BTW, Norton System Info calls it “5.1 (Build 2600)”

Wanderer and CyberSlug were on target.
I complained to MSFT about this issue and got the following reply:
"Gold" refers to the original released version of any product- without Service Packs installed.
