Microsoft sent an automatic security update yesterday, which I installed. Now, everytime I boot up I get a message which says something about a dll file being illegal. Is there some relationship between these 2 events?

Does the error message list the .dll? Please post it and we may be able to diagnose the problem.

I've got exactly the same problem, also after the recent update, so these events are definitely related. Could somebody pls give an idea how to fix it?!

Here is the message. It is titled RTHDCPL.EXE-Illegal System DLL Relocation.
The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\HHCTRL.OCX occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.

I had the same thing happen after installing an update. Had to perform a restore. Looks like you need a patch to fix an update. I think I will ignore that update.

You can start here at MS Support.
After you install this security update on a Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer, Realtek HD Audio Control Panel (Rthdcpl.exe) may not start. Additionally, you receive an error messageThe fix to resolve this issue is Here

Thanks, that did it. However, it forces you to allow MS to validate your copy of XP. I have Realtek audio on my computer which apparently caused the conflict.

Well, you don't wanna hear the words I'd use to describe what happened while I tried to update. First, I couldn't see the tool bar and was directed to the "alternate method". Then, it downloaded but said forget about using it because it was an outdated update. Then, it let me try again and said I wasn't validated. So, I got validated and then it let me get the proper udate.

Thanks people, I had the same problem and downloaded a fix from the following:

It works.

First check and see if you have any realtek audio drivers installed, if yes follow post #6 or 10. If not then go into the startup tab in msconfig and uncheck the RTHDCPL and reboot.

For info you may only get the DLL message when trying to open a program In my case it was Puzzlex6 but it can affect many programs where Realtek is involved. My guilty party was KB925902 installed on 4 April and KB935448 cleared the problem.MS telling you to get onto the program vendor to supply a replacement DLL was, I thought a bit over the top, when it was a MS problem.

if downloading and installing update 935448 doesnt fix ur problem try this:
