I need help with a problem regarding modems.
My parents computer has a dial-up modem ,which suddenly stopped working, discovered that it had broke. I have a dial-up modem on my pc that works fine, took the pc to parents house, but it did not work there, to it back home, reset the location, and it worked fine, the same modem pc and phone cable were used at two locations, but didn't work at one, how can this be? the phone line is standard. can anybody help me?

Cheers Steve

Did you connect a phone to the phone line instead of a PC to make sure there's a dial tone? Did you take your parents PC to your house to see if it would work there?

yes, checked phone line with phone, had dial tone, parents modem didn't work at my house, hence assumed broken modem.

As for one that used to install dialup security, I ran accross many areas that changes to the dial tone were not uncommon. Some places would lower the dial tone voltage so much I had to program the system to ignore looking for a dial tone and just dial anyway.
My point is you may have to go in to the modem settings and uncheck wait for dial tone. Another thing is not too common today but does occur is having too many phones on on line. This loads up the line and weakens the dial tone signal. I may be way off but if yours and thiers are not working on the same line then logic would dictate it's in the line.

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

Thanks for that setishock but i tried dialling with the 'wait for dial tone' unchecked, and every other setting possible, the line only has one phone attached and that was removed for modem access at the time. My parents modem was not live on that line, it must of broken before they moved in. so in theory only my modem has been tested on that line? Is there a difference in dial-up modems?

I hate to ask, but ... is one line dial pulse (DP) and the other tone (DT)?

I don't know. How do tou tell? Could be the answer though! How would you resolve it then? The line at home is a cable service provider so i am assuming that is DT, the other is a BT line.

Remember know, did try both pulse and dial by selecting each option in the dialing rule properties.

And I thought we had an answer!
