I have an ad-hoc wireless network with my laptop sharing my desktop's dial-up connection. When I turn on the desktop (with the laptop off), it immediately dials out to the Internet. According to ZoneAlarm, it appears to be trying to send data to 255.255.255.255. This has started since I set up the network. Any ideas?

You might try the networking forum. I used dns lookup and no such address is listed.

If you have any programs set up to auto-update (ie. anti-virus) it will dial up when there is an update. That could be the reason or you have some spyware or trojan doing it.

An older version of Zone Alarm I had caused this problem. They quickly put out a patch for it. Have a look if there is an update to Zone Alarm

The 255.255.255.255 is a null setting. It is what is put in to deactivate a setting.
Go to the internet settings and direct the systen to never dial a connection. The system should not dial out even if a program needs to do an update. Most software will wait till you go online and not create a connection for itself. If the never dial a connection function doesn't stop the calls, then a though and I mean though look at your system is in order. I don't mean to scare you but someone may have planted a dialer on your computer and you just might have something on it you would rather not have.
