I have a compaq deskpro with windows xp pro installed on it. My problem is that when i dial up the the internet via my dial up software the my isp supplied me, it disconnects itself after about 5 minutes. I'am using the internet when it happens so its not like im idle or anything. It seems to happen when loading big websites. I have the firewall on that comes with windows xp because i get an error saying 'error: with system authority/system' when i dont have it on.

If the error remotely resembles NT Authority\System Error Message blah blah blah the Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
You may have the Blaster worm on your PC.

you might try a line test, or an init string for your modem.
What are the specifics of the authority message? If it's something like 'RPC shutdown' or 'NT authority' you probably have the blaster worm, which can initiate disconnects even if the firewall is activated. You can get a patch for that at http://www.modemhelp.net/index.shtml.
