Make sure you have the ISP telphone number correctly entered!

Is the Modem actually dailling - is it 'chirruping' before you get the Error Message?

Do you have the XP Drivers for your Modem?

If it is an OEM Computer with XP Pre-Installed then the Drivers should be correct

That error message normally indicates that something is incorrect with your settings - most commonly either an incorrect phone number that is being dialed, but not answered remotely with the correct set of signals, OR - sometimes that happens when a user account has expired or been deleted for whatever reason - by the ISP.

Go to SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, and then into Phone & Modem Options. Click on MODEMS, and then on DIAGNOSTICS, followed by QUERYING the modem. In the lower portion of that window, you should get a bunch of "gooblygook text" (AT strings), if the modem shows up as being configured correctly, with working drivers that are recognized by WinXP.

If the modem checks out, then delete your dialup connection, reboot, and recreate the connection from scratch. Be careful to spell everything 100 percent correctly. See if that'll do the trick.

Hey Intel, AMD rulez!

I get this error occasionally. Just rebooting usually gets me back on line - resets settings.
This may be a "ho hum" response from a newbie, but its worth a try.
Good luck,
Jim
