DHCP service doesn't work properly

Specs: xp, p4 3.1ghz
I'm working on a friends computer right now.
I am having trouble with the dhcp service.

At first I wasn't able to get the internet to work, but then I found that the dhcp service was not started.

I started the service and the internet works just fine, however; whenever the computer starts the service does not start back up . It IS in the Automatic position. I have to go the service section and start the service manually for it to work.

There was a small trojan on the computer.
Sense then I have installed AWG, Ad-aware, spybot . I have scanned and cleaned everything. I also have erased a ton of un-used progrags, cleaned history, temp files, checked on downloaded program files and everything checks out. As well I have done a manual check of almost all windows folders/ program folders

I also have took off all start up items on msconfig as well a defrag.

The computer appears to be completely fine, though the dhcp service is not working properly.

There is one other issue too, Windows update does not work too. I get a internet time out connection. Both on firefox and ie. All other websites work.

If after using HijackThis or cleaning out infections, connection is lost.
How to configure TCP/IP
To configure TCP/IP, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.
2. Right-click the network connection that you want to configure, and then click Properties.
3. On the General tab (for a local area connection), or the Networking tab (for all other connections), click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
4. If you want to obtain DNS server addresses from a DHCP server, click Obtain DNS server address automatically.
Right click Local Area Connection > Repair.

Forgot to mention
Hijackthis Shows nothing ab-normal.

I'm not new to this stuff either .. I've been sidelining fixing computers for almost 15 years now.

I can't believe you would post that after reading my thread, obviously the internet is working. The exception is windows update. This is of course a little more indepth of of just making sure the damn proxy is not activated or the dns is working..

Basically I was posting this to see if anyone has had this issue.. which saves me hours of investigation time

"There was a small trojan on the computer."

Not only is there no such thing as a small trojan but it is also a oxymoron.

Any computer infected these days needs to be reinstalled from scratch. It is no longer kids playing with who can make the worst virus, it is all about cybercrime.

You can't clean a pc good enough anymore to close all the back doors that were put there.

Since the dhcp service runs under the local system account that may give you a clue to how compromised the system is.

Wipe and reinstall from scratch. Show your friend safe computing practices so it doesn't get infected again.
