My computer does not detect my ps/2 mouse and Internal modem.
Initially it did not detect the ps/2 mouse. Tried installing the mouse driver...no luck.
It does however detect serial and usb mice.Later the modem was also not detected. Says port open or in use.
Cleared CMOS....replaced battery...q/formatted HDD....reinstalled WinXP...same problem.
Someone said to check the IRQ...don't know how to go about it.
Would be grateful if directions could be given.

right click on my computer icon and choose properties. Then pick the hardware tab. Then pick the device manager button. Look to see if there are any yellow question marks or red x's. This will tell you if theres a problem. To see the irq of all your hardware go to the view button at the top of the device manager window and choose the resource by connection option and drop down the list for IRQ...it should be the third blue item.this will tell you what irq is for what hardware. Try moving the modem to a differebt PCI slot[shutdown first] and reboot and see if that helps.

HOLD IT!!!!!
I don't know about your system but in mine the bios preassigns the IRQ's for the hardware. Check that first. Having a couple of devices on the same IRQ is not uncommon. So don't go tinkering if you see this.
In the bios on one of the screens is an IRQ assinement list. To one side is what function it is. Find out what IRQ number the unseen device is exspecting to see then compare that to the list. If you see DISABLED by the needed number, follow the directions on the screen to change the setting. Let it boot to the desktop then shut down and install the devices. Power up.
