Device manager question marks

March 9, 2009 at 02:35:08
Specs: winxp, 1.6ghz/1gig
I have 3 things listed with a yellow question mark under the heading of 'other devices'. First one is NIC1394, second is the same thing and the third is Unknown device. I just installed a video capture device so maybe this problem started at the same time i am not sure. I gather that this problem device manager refers to is the firewire card which is something i haven't used in ages but may do in the future when I get round to using the ipod again.

Assuming none of your hardware has died.........

Try re-installing the drivers for any addon cards you may have, including the firewire and capture cards.

If any question marks still remain, you'll have to determine what, if any, hardware isn't functioning properly, and re-install the drivers for that device.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

I just installed the video capture card so maybe it is the IEEE card that needs reseating. I have never had the driver so maybe windows installed it. Don't remember really.

Well I reseated the ieee card and now in device manager it is listed twice under other devices twice like before without the 'unknown' device entry. I booted twice to make sure. The odd thing is I tested all the ports with the ipod and they work. Ultimately if it is dying then I can always pull it out and not care as the new video capture card has two ieee ports anyway.
