CPU/Ram: 128
Comment:

in my device manager under network adapters, it's showing a 3com card is
installed which the machine does not have and when i try to uninstall it it
says "failed to uninstall. device may be required to boot." also listed is:
admtek an983 10/100 pci adapter direct parallel linksys etherfast usb 10/100
ethernet adpater - packt scheduler miniport (twice)
packet scheduler miniport #4
packet scheduler miniport #5
wan miniport (ip)
wan miniport (ip) - packet scheduler miniport
wan miniport (l2tp)
wan miniport (pppoe)
wan miniport (pptp)
none of which will uninstall as well and get the same message as above.

items.

I noticed your 128 Ram is the minimum for XP, you may want to upgrade if you want SP2 to run properly. Ram is quite inexpensive anymore.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

ok i uninstalled QoS and it got rid of everything except for:
direct parallel
wan miniport (ip)
wan miniport (l2tp)
wan miniport (pppoe)
wan miniport (pptp)

i'm still unable to uninstall internet protocol (tcp/ip). any suggestions on how to do that and/or what may be preventing me from uninstalling it? the "uninstall" button is not available. grey shaded.

Is "wake on LAN" enabled in BIOS?

If so, disable it.

Use a search engine to get info for your setup.
Example > uninstall internet protocol
http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=uninstall+internet+protocol&btnG=Google+Search&meta=
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=299357
INTRODUCTION
In Microsoft Windows XP, the TCP/IP stack is considered a core component of the operating system, and you cannot remove TCP/IP. Therefore, when you view the list of components for a network interface, you may notice that the Uninstall button is disabled when Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is selected.
