Device Manager Blank

Hi, I got a friend's computer to have a look at because it was running slowly and I ran Ad-aware and Spybot and the like on it and registry cleaner program as well but whenever I restarted I noticed there was no sound and now the device manager is blank and I can't enabl it again. They didn't have system restore turned on so I can't do that, I searched here earlier and saw something about enabling PnP, I checked the BIOS and it was disabled so I re-enabled it there but still no joy. Is there a setting in Windows for it somewhere? Please help!

shuck13000, Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK to see if the plug and play "status" is listed as "started" and that the "startup type" is set to "automatic".

Virus and Spyware scans work better in Windows Safe-Mode.
See what happens in Safe-Mode, logged as Administrator. Is it the same ??

Guys! Thank you so much for your help! I checked services.msc and Plug and Play was stopped and disabled and so was Windows Audio. I started them both and I have sound again! :) The same time I lost the sound, the appearance of XP changed back to the old gray taskbar as well so I started themes again and got that back too. I'm just wondering now if there are other things that maybe have been disabled that shouldn't be?! Is there somewhere I can find out more or get maybe a list of generally what should and shouldn't be disabled?? Thank you again guys! I'm so happy!!

This also works Device Manager Blank...? I had the same problem, but it wasn't my Plug 'n' Play services it was this. I had to reset the permissions on the 'Enum' key in my registry.

Your problem may be different from shuck13000's. Did it occurred when you upgraded from XP SP1 to XP SP2?
