Comment:

The last several days, at random times -- although usually associated with using the internet -- the device (USB) connect / disconnect sounds come on. (Connect followed immediately by disconnect.) Haven't made any changes to the system. Have no idea why they are coming on. The mouse freezes while the sounds come on. All connections are good. Thanks for any help/advice.

I've had this happen when my MOBO chipset drivers got corrupted. Then my computer wouldn't correctly identify some USB 2.0 devices either.

Reinstalling the MOBO chipset drivers fixed the problem.

I had this problem as well... if you have an Intel chipset, you can download the drivers from Intel.com If you don't know what Intel chipset you have, look for the Intel Chipset Identification program on Google. Good luck.

If you know the model of your Gateway computer, you can go to their website and download the chipset drivers.

Do you know your model number?

Is your mouse a Corded USB by any chance? Someone else posted recently with a similar problem and I believe it turned out to be a broken wire in the mouse cable that was opening/closing with certain mouse movements thereby causing the USB disconnect/connect sound, and erratic mouse behaviour.

Sometimes there is a simple mechanical explanation for PC problems.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

You guys are awesome! It does appear Richard59 nailed it. I do have a corded USB mouse and I don't have much time to troubleshoot it today, but it does appear it must be just barely broken, b/c if I manipulate the cord just right, I get the disconnect/connect sound and the paused mouse. Thanks again guys!
