Just boot up with the Win2k CD and format it during setup.

Let's cut straight to the point: You aren't an idiot, because I do that all the time, and I am the smartest person in my town, and it IS Gate'$ obsession with screwing people over so they are FORCED to use his expensive phone support.
Now that we have that out of our system, here's the solution.

1.) Boot the Win2K CD. If you can't boot CD's, there is a program on the CD that will allow you to make bootdisks.
--The following steps are done from WITHIN the Win2K setup wizard--
2.) Delete the partition on which you have WinXP installed.
3.) Create a new partition where the old one was, and format with either NTFS or FAT32, depending on which best fits your needs.
4.) Install onto that partition.
NOTE: I hope you backed up your stuff!
Hope this helps.

did you upgrade from win2000pro? if you did did you keep the win2000pro system files while setting up winXP? if you did then try this. goto add/remove programs in control panel. double click on windows xp. the next screen should ask if you want to uninstall windows XP or windows 2000. click on windows xp and it will uninstall XP and go back to your previous OS

For some reason, the files are on local drive c: and local drive d: . You can format the local drive c: but it won't allow you to format local drive d: where all the files are. Can you please HELP.

I figured this one out. I didn't upgrade from win98. I had a clean winxp install and thought I couldn't get rid of it. Never fear.
Its actually easy in spite of whatever you read about this. Get a win98 boot disk. Once you have loaded dos and have your A:\ prompt, change to c:\ and write format c:
just like this:
C:\format c:
that'll do it.
The bitch is gone.

I was using fat32 so it may be that the win98 boot disk will not see ntfs.
But for fat32 it works like a cinch

Yeah, I tried the reinstall with win2k, and it tells you "The OS version on your computer is newer, disabling setup options"., and doesn't allow you to install. Micros---. I think you can make bootdisks though. dunno... f---. My floppy drive doesn't work either. haha. s---.

I installed the full version of XP home. I formatted C, installed...done. Now, after seeing just how intrusive and XP is - even with the latest drivers for my scanner and joystick, XP refuses to let them work, I have been trying to go back to WinME. I am fairly computer literate, having formatted many hard drives, partioned, etc.....meaning these are basically no-brainers. I booted up to C with a floppy, typed in the format C command, and waited. Booted back up and XP was still there, but drive D, a separate storage drive, was completely erased. I then used the HP restore disks and waited while all the original software was supposedly reinstalled. Nope, XP was still there and NO original software. So, thinking I was having a serious senior moment, I again went to C and formatted again....same result. I then partioned C and XP un-partioned it back!

I want XP off my system and am stumped. I've read the post about using a Win98 boot disk, switch to C and format...been there...it didn't work. This is the first time I have ever seen a system that seems to want to take over. Again, I state that I am literate enough to format a damn hard drive. Seph: the bitch is still there. Help!

doing the whole "format" dance from a floppy will only touch FAT32. trust me.

if you *need* to get rid of xp, and have some experience with the command line program fdisk, you will need to erase the partition that XP sits on. on a decent install of XP, it's on an NTFS partition, which cannot be read by a FAT floppy.

if you aren't familiar with fdisk, beg, borrow or steal a copy of ProQuest's Partition Magic. it's awesome. this will allow you to rid your machine of the dreaded XP, again, by eradicating the partition it lives on.

hope it helps.
