I was trying to do some repair my system file initially. So I inserted my XP CD during windows. And it asked whether I want to update windows. So I proceeded. It then restarted and started the 37 min windows setting up process from dos. thing looks ok, the screen changes from introducing XP new features, etc. TO the Benefit of Laptop using XP(clearType) ALL THE sudden, my laptop rebooted by itself. Then it started the setup process AGAIN from the beginning.... I tried several times and it always reboots on "benefit for laptop using XP" screen! I tried to take the CD out, see if it would boot normally, it always go back to the setup and then reboot again. I tried safemode, but it says I can't enter safemode during the setup process. I have tons of old files I want to backup still, Can i somehow get in windows or finished setup?! ANY SUGGESTION would be appreciated!!! Can I fool the windows, let it think I am not in setup stage!? since all my system file should still be there even the setup didn't finish. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Go to BIOS and change the boot device to C: (hard disk). So, when you restart the computer it will reboot from hard disk not from the cd.

HI, Joe
I looked at the bios boot sequence "1.hard drive, 2. floppy, then 3. CD-rom, 4 NIC", So I am already booting with harddrive first. and I can't disable CD-rom, I can only change the order of them. it seems like there are some file in hard drive to make it always go back to setup if setup didn't finish last time, so I stuck in a loop. By the way I am using a HP laptop... someone please help... I have lots of important file needs to backup....!! SOS Thanks joe

HELP SOS!!!!!!!
I tried
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318018 which seems like the similar problem, but I don't have PCanywhere. AND I CAN't GET INTO Safemode, because it think I am in setup stage

Try performing a repair re-install of XP.
You won't lose any data or settings.Set the cdrom as first boot device in the bios and boot with the XP disk.
Ignore Recovery Console and select Repair XP option.GoodLuck

run the repair again... its normal that the computer reboots while running the repair. it will actually reboots 2 times while the repair is running. when finished it will boot back to windows..
Note: you dont need to take any action when the computer reboots and prompts boot from hard drive or cd rom. just let the computer boot itself.. : )

tigerloch : It rebooted on it own during installation 10 times now..... it is in a loop
keef444 : I tried to boot from CD, the computer sensed that last upgrade process didn't finish, so it ask me to press enter to perform upgrade. It did a check of C drive, then copied files from CD to HD. It then started the 39 min process, A LOOP again.
By the way the first time, I let it boot from CD, the second time, I let it boot from HD, since I assume it copied its file to HD.
NO HOPE still, SOS!!!

I think that the PC is 'sensing' the upgrade from a registry flag....
As a 'Repair' will attempt to maintain the registry, this is the downfall.....
Your only hope might be to try a fresh install 'over the top' of ur existing installation. This makes no attempt to save ur existing registry, so it should go through ok.
You will have to re-install a lot of ur progs again, but ur data should be safe.Hope this helps

If you find out, can you let me know too?
I am in the same boat except when I try to
do the repair, it's asking for the administrator password - we didn't put one
in - a virus did?
