Every time I create a folder, a file named DESKTOP is crated in that folder It is only 1kb and contains "configuration settings". How can I keep this from happening? Is it required?

Number 4 in the above link from Chuck 2 is all you need to get shot of it.

It is OK to "show hidden files and folders".
