Comment:

I installed some registry cleaning software recently. All was fine. BTW, some of the software has some utilities similar to Tweak UI where you can adjust settings.

However, everytime I restart my computer now (or hibernate and login again), all the folders on the desktop have reorganised themselves. The quick launch also keeps disappearing and I have to put it back.

I tried looking at a registry setting to correct this and make XP remember the settings but it seems like it's already okay so not sure where else to look.

I've uninstalled all the registry cleaning software and that doesn't seem to have helped either.

Try the Taskbar Repair Tool.

Other suggestions;
-System Restore.
-Reinstall the reg-cleaner you removed and use it to set things back to default, then remove the cleaner.
-Check if you have other tweaking utilities that are controlling the desktop.
-START - Run sfc /scannow (you will need the xp cd), this repairs and or replaces system files.
-Repair installation.

Re-installing the registry cleaner will only help if you kept its folder and the undo's therein.

Avoid registry cleaners unless you know a good bit about registries. They often remove things they shouldn't and sometimes even the undo's dont restore correctly because they do not restore "last first" when a group of entries has been saved.

They are a useful tool when used as a guide but just letting them remove everything can be fatal.

There's a few it hbas listed but the one specifically with NoSaveSettings is in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Some others are NoSetTaskbar
NoActiveDesktop
NoToolbarsOnTaskbar
etc.

Any thoughts ?

It was already set as 0, which as far as I understand means it is enabled and is saving my desktop layout

I am using XP home and I have no entry for NoSaveSettings in the path you gave in #4. It might be worth Exporting that entry (so that you can Import it back if necessary) then deleting the entry and rebooting to see if it helps.

Do you have any registry settings in that path?
I deleted them as suggested (after exporting) and it makde no difference.
The desktop is reset and the quick launch disappears.

Anyone know any other settings?
It could be a program doing this but I would have thought it would have to be done via the registry as quick launch and desktop settings are all Windows based?!

Yeeks - deleted "them"?

By "that entry" I only meant you to delete NoSaveSettings itself, nothing more.

I would have thought system restore should fix it, if you have a good restore point just before you installed that repair tool.

Yeah, well it was only one other but it made no difference.
Once interesting "feature" of this is that occasionally, and after having placed everything how I want on the desktop, when double clicking a folder on the dekstop, everything is reset.
SO, this is not just a feature of restarting the computer.
Something must cause that ?

If I do a system restore, what will happen to any programs I installed after that point?

... most likely you would have to re-install them.
