With all the news about the upcoming Windows Vista, i started to think about buying a new computer upon the time of its release. Now what came to mind was which to buy, a desktop or laptop. Generally it will be used for everyday tasks. Which would you recomend. What is the average lifespan of a laptop.

Thanks for your advice,

Carlos

depends on what you want to do with it...what is your main purpose of this machine? playing games? graphic design? ripping music/movies? editting? if so then i would suggest a desktop, if you want portability so you can have a computer whenever/wherever then get a laptop...

yup!

its basically going to be used for everyday activities, email, web. nothing big, the most "challaging" activities i would perform in it is listen to music (i have a large music collection) but aht will be about all.

Thanks

Laptops are great only if you need to take your computer with you, Like business trips or to college. if you have no requirement for those purposes then save a bunch of money and get a desktop..

I'm sold on laptops...desk top never again!

Today laptops are just as powerful (if not more) than a desk top, and you can take'em anywhere.

If you're going to get one though, I wouldn't try to save money buying a cheap one. They do have the disadvantage of being more difficult and costly to expand so it's best to get more than what you need to avoid boxing yourself in, in the future.

Laptops, for most folx, are generally recommended as only a second or third computer...maybe plugged into your home stereo.

Laptop servicability is hopelessly expensive and their portability is greatly exagerated. One drop...or one misplacement; and kiss your $1700 or so g'bye.

I always get a kick out of those ads showing the "together" executive typing away in his/her spacious airline seat. In reality, touchpadding is miserably awkward compared to a mouse. Oh...the battery in his/her 3 month laptop is typically out of juice before the delayed and cramped flight ever leaves the ground.
