Desktop look bigger than monitor after update

Specs: Windows XP, Intel core 2 6400@2.13 GHz 2GB RAM
I am running a Dell Optiplex 745 with the standard 17" LCD monitor it came with. I have been using it on a resolution of 1280x1024 fine with no problems whatever... until today. After switching the system on this morning I got a message telling me windows updates needed a reboot to finish installing, which I did and after that, the desktop no longer fits on the screen.

I went into display properties thinking it must have increased the resolution, but no it was still on 1280 x 1024. Whatever I do the maximum resolution I can get to fit on the screen is 1024 x 768 and its actually making me feel sick to look at!! I really am finding it difficult to work with the screen like this and the only solutions I've been able to find on google etc involve people trying to exceed their monitors accepted settings.

Please can somebody help me or offer some explanation why this has suddenly happened

Gavo, Have you checked your Zoom setting? Open IE, click View>Zoom and set it to 100% which is the default setting. The Zoom option is also above the clock it you have the Status Bar selected under View>Toolbars.

Hey thanks for the reply, its not the zoom in my browser (although I did check it to make sure) its the whole screen. I have seen it before where you can see a portion of the desktop and you can scroll around it by holding the mouse pointed right to the edge of the screen.

My title is a bit misleading as I left the word "look" in there, the desktop *is* bigger than the screen, so if you're looking at the top part of the desktop, the taskbar will not be visible as its down below the bottom edge of the screen. I just don't understand why my preferred resolution suddenly won't work with this monitor when I've never had problems before now. In fact when I press the menu button on the monitor it says its optimum resolution is 1280*1024?!
