When I boot up my computer, my desktop show up for a few seconds, then it disappears and the only thing left is my background picture. I press ctrl-alt-del which brings up task manager...from there I type in explorer.exe under 'new task' .. this brings back my desktop, but only for about 10-15 seconds then it all disappears again....it just does it over and over.
I tried safe mode, but the desktop disappears and the "You are running in safe mode...." message re-appears, and I'm in the same loop.
I would appreciate any ideas on how to fix this!
Thanks!

... how long has this been going on?
... have you tried system restore in safe mode?
... to access safe mode keep tapping F8 key as pc starts up, select "safe mode"[ENTER]
... option "NO" on the "pop-up" go back in time (NOT just by a few days) to when the pc was working fine.
... keep us posted
Grrrr
wat do I know?
... got brain freeze

Boot into safe mode and run complete virus and malware scans.
Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Hi
Thanks for the replies....I can't do anything in safe mode either...when I click the "you are running in safe mode...." message, I get the desktop only breifly, then it disappears and I'm back to the same message. So I can't run a virus scan or anything like that because if I do try to open any program or folder etc, it all disappears.System restore is not turned on.....stupid, I know (this is not actually my computer).
Thanks for the help!

When booting into "Safe mode" have you tried the option "restore to last known good configuration" and selecting that instead?...
or you could try a repair install with the operating system cd

Hi
I have tried the "last known good" which didn't work. I haven't tried a repair install yet. I dont' have a windows disc, just some restore disks that I made myself when I got the computer...I hope that it has the repair option on it.
Thanks!

It won't have the repair option, normally all they have is the click here and reinstall everything after reformatting the drive.
Richard

I had this exact same problem. I had to do a complete OS restore with the restore disk. The I.T. guys said it was probably a rootkit causing the problem.
I wouldnt run a system restore in safe mode even if you can. I managed to be able to do that and afterwards my computer would not run at all. Generally viruses go straight for system restore and infect it.
My advice is to back up your files from the hard drive (if you don't know how, any computer repair shop can do it for you) and then reinstall the operating system. At this point it is pretty much all you can do.
