I am trying to set up my (5)yrs old daughter's desktop,so that all she has to do is click on a picture of what web page she would like to visit (Barbie.com,Disney.com ect). My problem is,that when I try to change the picture on the icon,it wont let me,says that I cant put my pictures on a icon.
I have done a google search but havent found any usefull help. There is some programs that claim to do this.I have tried one called icon constructor but found this not to work.Is there anything I can do?Or am I wanting too much?

There are many icon creation applications available that will alllow you to create an icon of an image. You say Icon Constructor did not work. Was there an error or did the program not have the functionality you wanted?

FYI: My 4 year old has an account and has no problem opening up IE and selecting the site he wants from the "Links" bar since those sites all use "Favorite Icons".

EDIT: It would also be very simple to create an HTML page with the images as links to the individual sites.

I agree with Michael J.
It is amazing what kids can learn. I would recommend you just create a favorites list and give a descriptive name to each site that your daughter can relate to.

And I agree with Michael J and OtheHill. Kids are a lot smarter than we give them credit for at that age.
At 4 years old, my niece had learned how to start up the computer, put in her favorite Elmo or Blue's Clues game disc, and run the software to begin the game. When she was tired of playing, she'd hit the "esc" button to end it, remove the disc, and properly shut down the computer all by herself. Amazing! :)

Open your image of choice in an image editor such as Microsoft Photo Editor (Go to Image, Resize and change it to change Pixels instead of inches).
Resize it to 32x32 pixels and Smooth.
Save it as a .bmp
Rename it to .ico

Bryco gave me the lead on what to try that
worked to put a picture on an Icon link on
my desktop.

I used IrfanView to resize my picture.
Free Ware
http://www.tucows.com/preview/19496...
The picture can be any picture that you have
resized and saved as a .bmp
I deleted the stated size and made the first
setting like Bryan said 32. The second sittings is changed automatically and I didn't change it.

Choose the Website to your Favorites and hold
the left click and drag it to your destop.
Right click it - properties - Change Icon -
Browse - Select your picture.
When you go to your My Picture, At the
bottom change the File type to All Files
for your .bmp to show up.
You can now right click it and left click
Select and OK or APPLY as needed.
I tested this for 2 different links and
added the picture of my choice.
It has to be resized and changed to .bmp
Jpeg won't work.

In my test I saved the 32x32 .jpg image as a .bmp and to my desktop. There it displayed as the default icon for a .bmp file type.

Once I renamed it to .ico the expected image appeared replacing the default .bmp icon.

Note: Since the image is being changed to a fairly small size the image needes to be something that fills the viewed image.
For example: a picture of bicycles going down the street will not produce a recognizable .ico image. An image of the face of a child (not the entire body) will make a good .ico image.

One could always crop the original image in order to acquire the desired image to convert to a .ico.

Of course, always use a copy of the original image and not the original.

Regards,
Bryan

Razor2.3 gave me the reason I couldn't see
a picture that I had posted.
Reason below for others who may need to make
the correction.
