In Win98 I could adjust the spacing of the icons on the desktop. In XP I change the settings (in Display Properties) but the icons stay fixed. Does anyone have a fix? A Registry modification would suffice.

Sorry! I should have mentioned that they are unchecked. I have two systems and I can't adjust either one. Can someone tell me if it's working ok on their system?

I changed my icon settings but it didn't take effect until I restarted to computer.

Hmmm. Thanks Preston and I forgot to thank Dan.
I've rebooted several times but it might be because I had 'Align to grid' on when I did that. I'll try another boot and check back.
At least I now know that it's not an XP bug and it should work.

Rebooting didn't help. Another funny thing I just noticed. On this one system, when I drag the icons around and let them go, they adjust themselves a little one way or the other, like 'Align to grid' is on. I also found out that I could get the icons on the other system closer together if I moved them into the approximate position first. I think I'm going to try a 'repair' on this system.
Thanks very much for your help!

Reinstalling XP seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks!

I was having the same problem. When I first unchecked Align To Grid and restarted after placing all my icons where I wanted them to be, it didn't hold where I put them and reset it to the grid. I did it again. It worked the second time. It may be a matter of having to do it more than once. Quirky, I know, but my icons are now where I want them and they stay.
