desktop gets kicked off line by laptop

Specs: Windows XP
we have a new laptop and a 5 year old desk top and DSL for our itnernet. If i am online with my laptop and my sister goes on line in a different room with her new laptop I get kicked off. If she is online and I try to get on she DOES NOT get kicked off..Why does seem to be a "one way" situation and how do I stop it from happening? Can I get my laptop to be a "Primary". We do not have a router. We have two separate modems that are identical but only one will at a time will allow us to be on line, HELP!

Well, you answered your own question. Only one connection can be used at a time. Go get a router and you can share the connection.
