Desktop files all gone??? HELP!

i was watching a dvd movie on my pc and when i minimized the movie all my files on my desktop were gone.. i dont know what happened. i restarted the computer but nothing, so i tried system restore but it only restored empty folders with no data inside. i have a router/firewall, norton antivirus so i dont think i was hacked. please help i lost over 8GB of data from my desktop..

Try this, right-click on the desktop and select "Arrange Icons By". In the sub-menu there is an option for "Show Desktop Icons". If there is not a checkmark beside it, select it.

i just discovered that all the desktop items from the "All users" profile under 'documents and settings' were still there, but all the desktop items from my profile are missing. i tried searching for the missing items but i just dont know how or where they have gone.
please any suggestions. thank you again for your replies.

You can use "AdvancedRecovery" to scan the partition. After the scan is complete, the lost file will be displayed in DataRecoveryWizard, you can select them and recover them.
