Dell Problem with MS Word 2002
Note: MS Word is included with MS Works and installed by Dell
1. First open My Documents then open MS Word and create a Word document.
2. Save the Word document.
3. First open My Documents, then open the MS Word document previously saved and you will be unable to revise the document or access page setup. It becomes a “read only” document.
4. However, if you open MS Word first and access the MS Word document and repeat the above steps without opening My Documents no problems are incurred.

Just as with any large OEM these days they do limit there software support. Most are around 90Days if that and what you have is a software issue not a hardware issue and that is what your warranty normaly covers. Ya, need to read these things folks. Just because Dell installed the software does not mean they are going to be there to hold your hand when you run into a problem even though they do try and make it sound that way.
The Dude, Your getting Delled comment was must amusing :)
Laters,

okay you want everything to work perfectly on your system no glitches of any kind yada
yada yada yada yadabut when you have a work around which involves no additional efforts why waste time bitching about it?
if you want it fixed call msword support at microsoft and pay them for their time and effort and youll be fixed

Dell (and any other hw company) will (hopefully) give excellent support of their own product (the hardware). dell seems to be much better at that than the others. Many are shocked to find that MS does NOT compensate other companies to support their own products. Perhaps even more shocking is the fact that MS (or any other sw company for that matter) will NOT support their own products for free. No hardware company today offers much sw support. Oh they might offer to re-install a given sw but supporting sw can cost a company 3.5 to 5 times the money per minute to support sw versus hardware. Another way to think of it is try calling Exxon to ask them how to fix the electronic ignition on your Ford Mustang. Yes, its true that the gas companies products are associated with the car manufacturers products and frankly the car is useless without the gas but gas and cars are different animals entirely. Also remember deletion and re-installation of software fixes sw with brute force and costs nothing to do. Do not expect a hardware company be it ibm, dell, hp, gateway, etc to support the software products better than the software vendor themselves. The software vendor ABSOLUTELY will not support the hardware vendor's products. Why is your expectation different for the software company than it is for the hardware company? I think its amazing any company will answer questions over a phone about how to use or repair their own products let alone free forever 24 hrs a day like dell does. If you want to gripe, gripe at the software vendors... but be willing to pay 5-10 times higher price on the software if you want free usage support on it.

do a serch for normal.dot and delete it. restart, should work....i work for gateway and this is a comon problem with word
