dell support forums help system not working

May 29, 2011 at 00:22:16
Specs: Windows XP home
Whenever i press the <F1> key and computer displays the first of the Help system screen. Then if I attempt to access any of the listed items, nothing happens.

Yes, I know that one has to "double click" to access any of the subtopics. I first noticed that the Help wouldn't work on WordPerfect and now it seems to be not working with any program that has a Help function

My computer is Dell Dimension 4700 running Win XP home.

Hey Gramps!
Does the Help system work in XP? If so, it is the vendors of the software that are limiting the help feature, or it wasn't installed completely. I see this most often when the user selects the default install rather than a complete install. Manufacturers do this to save drive space.
Have you had a virus as of late? The file extentions and associations are known to be a problem after some infections.
And of coarse, the obvious, did it work before? What changed? Sometimes a reinstall will correct this. Or use XP's system restore.

Lastly, Kudos! Not many users refer to the help file or know it's there.

Instead of F1 try the help and support in the start menu.

Then select topics by search term. Does it work then?

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

Not sure exactly what you are suggesting.
I opened WordPerfect and instead of pressing <F1> I clicked on the <HELP>
in the first menu line and when it opened, I clicked on the option that said <F1 or Help ... and then I get an error dialog box stating that IE could not open the file.
