Dell LT Very Slow

OS: Xp Home SP3
CPU/Ram: 1.7Ghz / 2.0 GB
Product: Dell Inspiron 1300

A friend ask me to look at his LT, it was running very slow. Upgraded the memory from 512Mb to 2.0GB, ran Adaware, Spybot & AVG found very little. Ran disk cleanup and defrag and removed everything except 2 programs from the startup. The LT isn't a whole lot faster. The boot seems very slow, but once it boots and gets the system loaded, opening programs and files seems faster. So it really the boot and loading, any suggestions, I haven't tried???

Run MSCONFIG & prevent useless programs from loading at startup. There are very few that are absolutely necessary:

go into the bios and check the boot order. what is first, 2nd, 3rd, etc...
