Dell Laptop: Black Screen of death?

June 22, 2005 at 14:30:27
Specs: Xp Home, N/A

Basically i have this dell inspiron 8100 laptop and one day it jsut booted up and in the middle of teh boot up, the screen jsut turned off. Now i get a black screen. The only way to get it to pop back up is to fold teh screen down and then back up again and then it only stays on for 20 seconds at the most. This is extremely odd and i have tried several things. If anyone has any ideas what could be causing this, i would appreciate replies. Thank you very much! I'll be glad to supply more information about teh computer if you need, i am a somewhat advance computer user. Thanks

By the way.... it works fine when it is on only batteries, but teh battery doesn't hold charge so the battery lasts like 5 minutes.

Check the plug-in for the external power pack. Mine did the same thing and it turned out to be an old and week connection at the plug... the contacts were not fully making.

I have used Dell laptops for years, my current 2 favorites are an Inspiron 8500 and 8600. I had the same issue with the 8500, sent it to Dell and they replaced the entire screen.

come to think of it I might actually have a couple of those that I used for spare parts. Both have working monitors if they are the same model. If so, I'll let you know and we can figure something out to get you a new LCD for it.

the ones I have are Latitude c800's (three working LCD's/video cards/etc) so if you want to check to see if the parts would work, just let me know and we'll figure out how to get them to you.

I've had nothing but bad luck with Dell laptops. I had a Dell CPT laptop from a few years ago and it developed the problem you described: Press power, then 10 or 20 seconds later, the screen goes dark.
I have two other Dell laptops, both model C640 which have a similar problem. Turn on, wait a few seconds, screen turns off, computer turns off.
But all of my laptops are out of warranty and having searched on the web, it appears to be a LCD screen problem. UGH!

I have had the same problem with my 1150 laptop, I contacted Dell and described my problem. When my back-light goes out on my screen I can take a light and shine it indirectly at the screen and the graphics are still running. I can also run my laptop off of a monitor and it works great. I have found several things that can be wrong if the screen goes black. First if you have the ability most laptops have a screen shut off when the laptop is closed if you get a chance to check that it could be a problem. I checked mine and it in no way effects the screen. Anyways, I re-installed windows and my screen jumped to life. I started installing programs that dell had give me but after installing the first XP update and a couple of screen drivers the screen went dead again, so I did a system restore and sure enough my screen came back to life. I have stayed away from windows updates and other drivers from dell and I have not had a problem since. Also I have heard that the power save settings on the laptop can lead to the screen shutting down. My power save program is one that I deleted early on so I don't know if it was the problem or not but it might be worth a shot, besides the program is not going to do you any good if your laptop isn't portable.
