I agreed to look at a friends laptop. First off, before we installed xp his screen has that lcd hypercolor effect (he dropped it once) during bios and windows me logo, but when ME starts the display works fine. He had a lot of spyware and lost his me cds so we decided to upgrade to XP. Now, the same hypercolor effect happens during bootup, but windows xp never displays and the screen goes black after the XP logo even though I hear the "welcome to windows sound." The screen goes black in XP when the display came up in ME (the hypercolor goes away at this point). If I plug the laptop into an external monitor everything works fine. I have played with different resolutions/screen sizes and the same thing keeps happening. I have downloaded and installed all relevant drives from dell. I am lost, is there anyway I can get the laptop to work as good as it did under ME? Gulp, I know that is an oxymoron but that is where I am right now. Any help, and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks. -Russell

why would I fiddle with the inside if the display works fine on an external monitor. I would assume that means the ram is seated fine. Everything did work under ME just yesterday, so I don't understand how any loose connectors could be the culprit.

Well, you said you had tried everything, and it didn't work, so you were asking for suggestions, right? I guess just suggestions you want to hear?

Why don't you try to load some other OS on there then. ME is pretty cheap on eBay.

oh please don't take my reply personally, it was a manifestation of my frustration if I came across that way. It isn't my laptop and I just wanted to make sure i exhausted all options before triage. :)

Triage is recognized in most countries by law.You probably have a 1ghz pIII mobile processor and Dell support has a fix for video drivers in Windows XP.It was designed for windows ME.So that is a possible cause. He still dropped it once. Good Luck with the computer rvirgilio.

I have a dell support account but can't find the fix you have referenced, could you point me in the right direction. I have looked under the 8100 model and didn't find any mention there. Am I missing something, maybe you could walk me through the steps to find the fix once i login with my support account. You help is greatly appreciated, if I get this fixed there will be another happy person in this world :)

I have visited that site, it appears the 25 versions of drivers you are talking about are for monitors, there are only 2 video drivers and I have installed the appropriate geforce togo driver. thanks for your help though, and your patience.

Go to the Dell site, but be cardeful because obviously you have no experience working inside laptops. Things are fragile and can come loose easily.
