Hi,

I installed Office XP on my fiancé’s Dell 4550, as well as updated her Norton AV and Webroot Spysweeper. She presently has 256 Megs of RAM. I checked with Dell and she has a 533 FSB, so I ordered 2 sticks of 512k ram. The board maxes at 1 gig. Is anyone familiar with the Dell systems? I have a custom built and when I need to swap memory, etc. I unscrew the back of the case. However, someone told me that the Dell systems are built differently and the back cases do not have to be unscrewed, they pop out. Before I attempt to unscrew the case, I was wondering if anyone knows about the Dell 4550 Dimension 533 FSB?

She did tell me a few weeks ago that the system started to crawl only after I got my hands on it and them she laughed and said she was kidding. Hmmm, I felt the least I could do was buy the memory and upgrade the system.

Thanks in advance for your help!

HERE is the Owner manual for Dimension 4550. Page 83 shows you how to open the case by pressing the two release buttons (no screws). Good luck.

Start by getting rid of "Norton AV and Webroot Spysweeper"

According to Crucial, you need PC2700 or PC3200:

Here's 1GB (2 x 512MB) PC2700 from newegg.com for $50 shipped:

Here's your case...looks like all you need to do is press a couple of release buttons & open up the top:

That's right. These cases are very easy to open. Just make sure you don't pull the cover open too fast, as you may accidentally pull the cables loose.

Life's more painless for the brainless.
