Reading your post you state it's a clean install. I'm inclined to think perhaps you loaded over the top of '98 and when asked if you "wanted to save" the previous OS you answered in the affirmative.

If that is the case, you may very well strike problems within your registry, if you go ahead and delete that folder.

Hard lessons learnt are not easily forgotten.

Was it a parallel install to the same partition or a new install to a different partition, The difference being with a parallel install you can just delete the windows 98 folder. With an install to a different partition you will need to either delete the partition that 98 is on or format that partition. In either case you probably will still need to get rid of the duel boot option in BOOT.INI.

Run "Disk Cleanup",Start/accessories/system tools, It will give you the option to delete all win98 files. I upgraded XP and deleted all the files after the upgrade. XP is running sweet.

Expanding " a little" on "Custom Built/Post-2" response...

If you did a "clean install" in theory you will/should now have both '98 and XP on the drive, (and this will mean that '98 appears in the XP boot.ini as an option). If so and you no longer want '98 around... all you need to do is to:

Boot to XP; set it as default OS to boot (if it's not already); then (via XP Explorer) locate/delete the '98 folder from the drive/partition. Also edit out the references to it in the boot.ini (typically the line is along the lines of c:\windows). You can also locate/delete the '98 boot/start-up files and bootsect.dos from the Primary partition; but as they take so little space it's hardly worth the effort?

Empty recycle-bin and defrag the drive to clean/tidy up the scene.

Job done.

Presuming XP is not in the Primary partition (where '98 almost certainly is/was) do NOT reformat the Primary. Do so and you will lose access to XP in the process. You can defrag teh partition voa XP and use it for data etc. If XP is in the Primary partition - again do not reformat - for obvious reason.

Incidentally if you did manage to get XP into the same partition as '98 you were lucky by all accounts. M$ suggest XP doesn't like sharing a partition with '9x/ME, and usually won't go into one already occupied (by '9x/ME...).

i only got one partion on hdrive and w98 and xp are sitting together.

in the boot.ini the only reference is to xp.

there's no reference to w98 in disk cleanup.

i think i should have rebooted with the xp cd and not have w98 running at the start of the install.
