Hello,
I'm trying to delete all temporary files in
Documents and Settings in Win XP prior to doing a data backup. I've deleted the .tmp files, but I have 400MB of zipped cab files and a few .exes, etc, that total another 200MB. How can I know for sure what I can safely delete?I ran System File Checker recently. Does Windows copy the cab files from Windows\System to C\Temp for this test? Is it ok to delete these from C\Temp after I run SFC?
Also, in XP's Disk Cleanup, my temp folder always shows empty. Why?
Since my Disk Cleanup won't delete the Temp files, can I delete them the old way, ie, highlight all files and folders in Temp and delete? Is this safe? I know that occasionally some files shouldn't be
deleted, but I know of no sure-fire procedure for what should and what shouldn't be deleted. Thanks A Lot!
Larry

I do it all the time Larry (delete the files manually), and have had few bad side effects.
1. Make sure no updates are pending. To ensure this, reboot your pc before deleting the files. I had a Liveupdate (which told me to reboot) put files in the temp directory, then after I deleted them, the post install process (which runs during the next reboot) could not complete.
2. If you are still wary, move the files somewhere. Then after everything seems to still run ok, delete them at your leisure.
