We are using novell servers v4.2 sp9. We have the Novell client 4.9 SP1a on windows XP SP1 workstations. Sometimes we cannot delete files on the server via windows explorer from the desktop. the users have full rights to these files. However, in most cases if we wait 30 minutes or so, the user is then able to delete the file. Can anyone offer any solutins or possible causes.

Guess since you mention XP that qualifies for the xp forum vs the netware forum. :-)
Lets start with your network layout and server hardware. Please describe your hard drives/configuration, server cpu/memory, and nic card. What the pcs and server are connected to [hub, switch, multiple switches]
When was the last time the server was rebooted? Do you have internet to the desktops? Any other issues with the server, like programs having the same issue?
