deleted files return after reboot

Specs: XP
I am running out of space on my hard drive. So I bought an external hard drive, and copied and removed 40 gigs of data from my C drive. When finished it said I had 40 gigs free space. I rebooted and now I get warnings that my hard drive is almost maxed out---yet those files I removed apparently are there somewhere---but I have no idea where since those files I deleted can not be found. Help! How to fix this situation?

Deleted files usually go to the Recycle Bin. Have you deleted the files in there ???
I noticed that file Searches of your harddrive do not reveal what's in the Recycle Bin.

Yes. I've already done that.
