Howard: two potential fixes;

1. ATI Technologies, Inc. says: "Regarding Delayed Write Failed error after installing ATI Enhanced drivers.

This issue can affect any device driver install under Windows XP. The issue is not specific to ATI.

In some instances, after installing the ATI display drivers, the error "Delayed Write Failed" will appear after restarting Windows. Not all configurations are affected.

In most instances this is a result of changes to the Virtual Memory and Memory Usage settings in the System Properties. Change the Memory Usage setting back to the default value of "Programs" will prevent the error from occurring. Also, you should set your Virtual Memory to system managed.

- Open the System Properties
- Select the Advanced tab
- select Settings under Performance
- select the Advanced tab
- select the "Programs" option for Memory Usage"

2. if you are using a VIA KT133A chipset on your motherboard, try this:

a. update your system BIOS.
b. install the latest 4-in-1 drivers from VIA, available here:
http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/4in1...IN1_V449vp2.zip

c. install George's latency patch, available here:

http://207.111.26.5/dl0/vlatency_v020_beta21.exe

I'm having the same problems as Howard mentioned above on my WD 160 GB Drive, but no luck with the above solutions. I have noticed one more thing though. there seemes to be a point where my hard drive has enough data on it, that the errors start. If I reboot (And everything on the drive appears fine), and delete some files, then I can copy over and download big files again. From what I can tell, the problems start when the size of the data on the drive gets somewhere around 90 Gigs or so.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

I similarly have the same problem. Is this not a very common problem that Microsoft should have solved with a downloadable update by now?

a few more ideas that might help:

1. update to IE6 SP1.

--------------------
2. http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBM/tip6000/rh6046.htm
says:

" When you perform any file management activity on Windows XP, you receive a Delayed Write Failed error messages.
If any of the following conditions exist, you might encounter the error:

- The Enable write caching on the disk feature for your disk is turned on.

- The Ultra Direct Memory Access (UDMA) hard disk controller is using a 40-wire connection.

- The BIOS settings are configured to force faster UDMA modes.

To resolve this issue:
- Make sure you are using a 80-wire, 40-pin cable.

- Turn off the the force faster UDMA modes setting in your computer's BIOS.
If the above fails to correct the problem:

- Turn off Enable write caching on the disk:
1. Use My Computer or Windows Explorer to right-click your disk and press Properties.

2. Select the Hardware tab.

3. Select the disk and press the Properties button.

4. Select the Policies tab.

5. Clear the Enable write caching on the disk check box.

6. Press OK and OK.

7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 for each disk.
---------------------------

3. at the link below a Microsoft engineer says that you need an XP driver for your disk controller, plus more ideas at:

http://bermangraphics.com/problems/delayedwritefailure.htm

4. at the link below, Saber said this:
"After much trial and error, I encountered a post that stated VIA based IDE controllers can only run one UDMA channel at a time. Disabling UDMA on the secondary enable for DVD playback, but don't forget to turn off the first one!) fixed the "delayed write failed" error that was corrupting my hard drive.

Running a DVD drive and an IDE disk with UDMA at the same time would require a SCSI card. I tried that, but I didn't disable UDMA on one channel.

btw, the default was just primary channel enabled."

5. if you have a Maxtor drive, Shadi Eideh says: "this might be related to Maxtor's Write Verify feature that's enabled on new drives. This feature should automatically be switched to off after 10 power cycles (power off) of the PC . The feature forces the drive to Read every Write it does just to make sure it hasn't been damaged during shipping or handling, the consequences of this subsequent write/read operation is of course beyond normal slow drive performance. This feature, also, sometimes forgets to turn itself off -not officially mentioned by Maxtor-, but they have a tool on their support website that allows you to force it to 'off'."

6. more interesting ideas about this error, especially about changing IDE bus speed, virtual memory and pagefiles at:

PatMag: if XP will not start, you need to start the emergency procedures to get going again...the first step is the Last Known Good Configuration;

restart the computer and repeatedly press the F8 key to reach the Windows Advanced Options menu,
use the arow keys to select Last Known Good Configuration and press the Enter key.

from there, if needed, you can move on to System Restore, Repair, Reinstallation.
