Delayed pc crash.

Specs: Windows XP
So, about 3 weeks ago my computer starting going haywire and began shutting itself off. The pc is about 3 yrs old and is running XP. Right before it shuts down the screen fragments. By fragmenting I mean thin rectangle appear on either side of the screen and reflect what ever passes on them to the opposing rectangle, a sort of a mirror. I have also noticed that the longer I leave it shut off(i.e. a day or so) the longer it will run before it shuts down. Could I have a faulty video card? Also, at first it would flash a BSOD, too fast to jot down the code on it, but now it ceases to do that. Any ideas on whats wrong with my pc?

Could it be overheating? Is it a laptop or desktop system? What are the system specifications?
Do you know how to get into BIOS setup and check system temperatures?
