Comment:

I defragmented my 120 GB secondary drive D:/ for all my media last night. It took seven hours to get to 92% where it was "compacting files." All the red fragments were gone and it all looked good and blue. However, the computer froze at 92% for several hours. Task manager said Disk Defragmentor was not responding. I waited another hour but had to eventually hit the power button.

The Chkdsk blue screen ran on D:/ when it started up and all seemed good. But when I went to analyze the drive, an error screen said that Chkdsk was scheduled to run and could not analyze the drive. I restarted again, blue screen came up again, and it started...same problem.

What do I do?

OK, I just tried that. When I restarted, it checked both my drive C:/ (Windows) and my drive D:/ (Media Files). When I tried to analyze D: it still said Chkdsk f/ is scheduled to run.
I can analyze C: though. it is only D: that won't.
Thanks for the suggestion...any others?

Well see im a KID jsut to let you know, 11 to be exact im a serious computer kid, i have my own in my room im like a leach to it, mabye use a aftermarket program perhaps, type disk defragers in Google. I use to have one, i forgot the name but it would disable your windows defragger and all the windows utilities. I think it might of been "Disk keeper" I hope you can get that (the trial) it sounds like it is jjsut the stuff for you if not uninstall it because it disables all windows tools. I'm sorry for your problem if this dont work i have no ideas.

One last/other suggestion, mabye you should try system restore before this lockup you had or mabye youve made it where it wants to chkdsk to many times like i had a problem where my pc was so slow i happened to click on the chkdsk 10 times or so and i shut down and restarted 10 times. And it fixed it

Disk keeper has been recommended to me before...and I will try it, but the check disk on drive D: always happens when I start my computer. I want to get rid of that. I never clicked on check disk so I couldn't have done it multiple times. It just happened.
I can't do system restore now because I disabled it and then enabled it trying to resolve my other problem.

Any other suggestions anybody?

Maybe try a diagnostic from the hard drive manufacturer's web site.

I would postpone the system restore for a last resort. I have a feeling it will not help with this problem and may complicate matters.

You can download the free version of DiskKeeper here called: DiskKeeper Lite

Now for your problem: Look in your startup list for a task scheduler/manager entry (have no idea what name it will be under) or Windows may put it in as a separate entry under it's own name (you'll just have to look around in there). Disable it and then reboot. Then try your defrag program.

It's easier if you use a startup program to enable/disable entries. There is a small free program called StartupRun (29.3kb download), that works great, dosnt need to be loaded in startup, and uses almost no resourses. You can also enable/disable/delete and execute startup items without having to have Windows open in diagnostic mode.

StartupRun

Dont delete any items in startup .. always disable first, run you system awhile and see if it causes any problems before removing any startup items.

Ok, I looked in task Scheduler and didn't find anything suspicious. All the schedules were created months ago...nothing recent.
I also tried the startup run and everything looks normal there. I will disable one at a time and reboot to see if any of them do anything.
I also tried Diskeeper Lite. the following message comes up (basically the same as OS defragmenter):

Diskeeper has detected that CHKDSK is scheduled to run on drive D:/. This is due to either a user request, or because the operating system has found errors in the file system. CHKDSK will run automatically during the next system reboot. Until CHKDSK is run, diskeeper cannot defragment this volume.

I did not request the CHKDSK so I am assuming I have some errors. How do I fix them because the CHKDSK occurs every time I reboot?

Thanks for your input, any other suggestions?
