I've tried using Microsoft's Defragmenter and it isn't really working that well. Can someone suggest a freeware/shareware alternative?

rock_chick, another one is called 'Diskeeper'. There're 2 versions, DK, and DK Lite. I've heard mixed reviews about both. See:
http://www.diskeeper.com/profile/su...
or get Diskeeper Lite @:

among others.

XPs defrag is based on DK Lite.

if you are not comfortable with a command line interface, here is a graphic user interface, designed for Contig:

simply unzip both downloads into the same directory of your choice and run 'power defragmenter gui.exe'

oops ... somehow the description for the first link in my previous post has gone missing.

'Sysinternal's Contig is a free, powerful command line defragmenter'.

power defragmenter gui is free as well.

23 Ways To Speed WinXP Without Defrag
http://www.techbuilder.org/recipes/...
While it was true that defragmenting helped older PCs, it no longer applies. Today we have 7200-RPM (rotations per minute) hard-disk drives with improved seek and latency times; many also contain an 8-MB cache buffer. Let's not forget Windows XP's ultra-efficient NTFS (NT File System). For PCs, servers, and workstations equipped with these innovations, defragmenting no longer makes much improvement, if any, to system performance.

========================================

Complete defrag.
Turn off Pagefile, reboot & go into Safe Mode & defrag.
Reboot & turn Pagefile back on.

Well my computer isn't exactly old though my computer standards it may be. I only have a 400mb drive and the fragmentation factor is huge!
