Can anyone recommend me a really good and dependable defragmenter. I am kind of a novice so i need a safe one.
Thanks

What is wrong with the MS defrag program?
Anyway, NTbackup and restore is 100% and you get a jimdandy way to protect your data in the deal.
Both free.
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

I use Diskeeper. It is available from here http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.asp... and it is well the money...

Perfect Disk is the industry leading defragment tool for windows:

I prefer Diskeeper best (have tried Perfectdisk but opted for Diskeeper). Did you know that Diskeeper provided the basic defragger used in XP?

If you run a full scan it will also implement a defrag if required.....

diskkeeper lite has been the default defragger when win2k came out and it hasn't improved much since

I use diskeeper 10 and like it because it has a set it and forget it function where it automatically defrags in the background while I am doing other things on my machine .. i am generally unaware of it even running!
Lots of varied opinions on this! another thing to consider .... HD's are larger these days and don't require defragging as much as they did in earlier years. Stick with the freebee installed in windows.best of luck Frank :

says who?
i_XpUser

says me from personal experience. the older dos machines needed defragging almost daily.
With windows XP i don't seem to bog down much ans don't need defragging as much. moot point with diskeeper10 running tho as it defrags automatically once the HD reaches a certain % of fragmentation.

I think it's because you are running NTFS regardless of HD size.
An an FYI NTFS is more resistant to fragmentation than FAT. The reason NTFS is less prone to fragmentation is that it makes intelligent choices about where to store file data on the disk. NTFS reserves space for the expansion of the MFT, thereby reducing fragmentation of its structures.

My four NTFS partions gets defragged every day, as I do a lot of video editing. This takes about 15 minutes for the 2 drives. It even goes for a spin when the screensaver is running.
Diskeeper Lite is not the default defrag utility in Win XP mattie. it's a very basic version which MS have put in there...

I use Speed Disk In Norton System Works 2005. Man it takes ages but I see way better performance with this than with the regular Windows Defrag. But for many a year that is all I had and saw no problems with it. Speaking of which, tonight I'm sorting my files and then defragging all my drives since I'll have cleaned some space out :P

if ur willing to pay, get PerfectDisk 8.0. no matter what anyone else says, perfectdisk is better than diskeeper, or if u want a free one, get Auslogics, which also very good.
