Is it shutting down before, during or after defrag? If during, then how long after starting the gefrag?

Before running a defrag, run scandisk on the drive and correct any errors or lost allocation units

I guess there are more problems to this PC than just Shutting down during Disk Cleanup & Defrag. With 256MB of System Memory, lack of adequate amount of RAM is an unlikely cause for the symptom mentioned in the post but BAD RAM can cause unexplained shut downs and freezeup problems.I will first try and rule out any malware such as Virus/Trojans and Spyware as they are more easily treated with Software.

Any unexpected shut downs warrant a search for hardware causes like Overheating, Bad RAM and Power Supply issues.

Try running those things in Windows Safe-Mode.
