My parents have your basic dell computer that's around two or three years old. It has XP and recently I've had to reinstall XP onto the computer for them. After reinstalling it however, the display will not go above 640 x 480 and is set on "Default Monitor". I've tried to install the drivers for the monitor but it won't allow me to click properties. When googling the problem, I saw that many people suggested going to device manager and removing the default monitor manually, but there is no monitor tab at all on the device manager list. I'm at a loss, so any help would be much appreciated!

You need to install the drivers from Dell for the onboard video, or for the video card if it has one. By the way, why did you have to reinstall XP ?

Go to Dell's Support site, and enter the Service Tag of the machine. Then, download the chipset drivers for XP. Install those first. Download the video drivers, and any others you need. If after installing the chipset and drivers and rebooting you still don't have the option to change the resolution, install the Video drivers.
If you have the Dell Resource CD that came with the computer, all the drivers are on there, and you don't need to download anything.

Actually that would be the chipset drivers for the Dell motherboard, not XP.

Well, to be completely precise, it's the chipset drivers for the Dell motherboard and for XP.

Once he selects the OS he's running, then he'll see the appropriate drivers. wataclassic, did you download the drivers?
