If your motherboard gives you a choice, go with PC2100 DDR-RAM, and install no less than 256 MB, but preferably 512 MB.

Windows XP likes a page file equal to 1-1/2 times the amount of RAM, so don't disable it or limit its size too much. Set it to a fixed size(i.e. for 512 MB of RAM, set the minimum and maximum to 768 MB).

Rambus requires you to have pairs.

Correct, Rambus uses a 16-bit address bus if I'm not mistaken so you need two for use on a 32-bit system.

That is correct you need to use 2 sticks if you want to use RAMBUS. 256MB = 2x128MB 512 = 2x256MB. RAMBUS proccesses at 266 instead of 133 like SDRAM but it has to process through both card where SDRAM is quicker for small tasks. For gaming use RAMBUS it works better for streeming media

Ah... so Rambus is similar to the old EDO in that the memory sticks need to be installed in pairs. My old PC I just got rid of used EDO. I hated EDO for that reason.

Memory had to be added in matched sets of two so upgrading one's RAM could be expensive to say the least. And it was a few years ago when memory prices were high.

I'm glad I opted for the Athlon config on my new PC, which uses DDR 266 MHz DIMMs.

Yes, RDRAM needs to be installed in matching pairs. Thats why they are sold in kits and thats why its always safer to buy it that way.

Why does RDRAM use such a small bus? 16-bit? That is so stupid. Why not use a 32-bit bus instead and then it should be way faster and you can use single modules.

Ah but Rambus sucks anyway, go with DDR :)

the 2 modules together make up the 32bit, that's why it's in pairs.
