She claims it wasn't responding and had a blk screen with dos-like command lines. My Dell windows backup cd doesn't have any drivers. How do I get the necessary drivers for Hardware recognition (plug & play)? ie monitor, network hardware, various cards, cd rw drive, dvd drive, etc.
Thanks in advancekkmarty

Judging by the speed of your computer it is a fairly new system. The dell recovery CD's should have everything you need. Look for the one labeled Windows XP. Pop this in your CD ROM drive, turn on your computer and follow the steps.
This should get you pretty close to how it was when you purchased it.

And do make an administrater account and dont tell password.
Dont give other users these rights on their own accounts.
When their account is fubared, just delete it and make them a new one.

and remember to turn on windows firewall, or install a firewall before connecting it to the internet.

Mario, thanks for the reply. The cd is labeled "This cd is not for reinstallation of programs or drivers". After running the install, the monitor resolution is stuck on the lowest setting: doesn't recognize the monitor. Trying to log on to the network didn't work: didn't recognize any of the network hardware.

did you get a second CD ???
If not drop in the recovery cd after the system loads.
Or check the cd on another comp if you can, and close the auto run, and go into the cd through my computer and brows the cd manualy and see if ther eis a folder with the hardware drivers in it.
That sound a bit wierd usualy dell and ppl like that construct the recovery cd with all drivers loaded.
See how you go with that if no luck repost and we will see whre we go from there.

IF IT AINT BROKE, DONT FIX IT

Dell computers come with a "Resource CD." If you can't find it, Go to www.windowsupdate.com. After it scans your computer click on hardware updates and check everything there. Then download them. That will have alot of the drivers you need. For the rest of the drivers, go to the manufacturers website to download the drivers. Drivers are usually listed under the support tab on the website. To find out what devices still need drivers, right click on my computer and click hardware. then click sevice manager. Anything with a yellow ? next to it needs a driver.
Good luck. If you need more help feel free to ask.

"To find out what devices still need drivers, right click on my computer and click hardware. then click sevice manager." I meant to say device manager.

Dell systems all ship with several CDS. The XP CD is usually a sort of burgundy colored CD for reloading the OS and the driver CDS are usually Blue. As one user noted above, it will usually say something like Dell Resource CD (Drivers, Diagnostics, etc), another one will be software that was on the system like CD Creator software, DVD software. Sometimes the MODEM driver is on a separate blue CD. In my business I have done a lot of recoveries on systems and a guy recently had the exact same problem and all I had to do was use the resource CD. It scans the system based on the type (eg. Dimension 2400) and provides a list (with checkmarks next to it) of devices found in your system. Then you need only click on the checkmarked items and you can walk through the driver reload process. Hope this helps.
