I see that there are companies selling what is called "USB 2.0 file transfer cables".

What is involved with setting this up between computers? I work on computers for friends, and from time to time, i have to install programs on their machines.

I have been doing this with the old ZIP drives ( 100 megs ), but this is slow, and that is why i was looking at possibly using the USB file transfer cable.

If i get that cable, am i looking at having to network the two machines to each other?

Also, is special software needed to be able to transfer the files? If i use something like XP's "Explore", how will the second computer be displayed as?

If you are going to buy a cable I suggest buying a networking crossover cable instead. Most network cards in computers will operate at a faster rate than a USB connection.

honestly you can't go from sys to sys w/USB. all usb cable are made for transfer "stuffs". if you have firewire, would be better than usb.
usb transfer rate is 400mbs and firewire is 800mbs.

what kind of router do you have? cause if you have -n than just use that instant.

I use the firewire 1394 connection to hook my two home computers up together. I can transfer files at 1 gig a minute as well...

Cheap at the price as well $5.00 for a two metre cable.

Firewire speed is 400mbps. Firewire 800 is 800mbps. In real world tests original firewire 400 generally outperforms USB 2.0.

You can indeed transfer from system to system using a USB transfer device. I bought one, but it only worked on 2.0 USB, so I returned it. The software interface was a bit complicated as well. I think it was called the Tornado.

What device are you thinking about buying?

Thanks for the responses folks... I guess i am still a little in the dark tho.

I have not really settled on any specific cable setup. I just noticed an add for one today, and that's when the idea came to me to put the ZIP drive in the drawer.

I have a Linksys wireless router, but to be truthful, i have never had much luck trying to network a couple of computers that way. Did once, and found i could only transfer from one machine to the other ( i guess one was a host and the other was not ). All the other times i tried to network, usually was 20 or 30 minutes of wasted time trying to get them to see each other.

Bottom line, i never really mastered setting up a network. So please don't start flaming me that it's so easy, cause i sure didn't find it that easy.

So back to my original question. If i get a network crossover cable OR, i get a USB cable, will i still have to do a network setup? THAT is the question.

I still did not get a difinative answer to my question....

If i get either one of the cables, do i still have to setup a "network" to pass data over that cable ?

Will you need to set up a network? Maybe; maybe not. Will you need special software to transfer files? Maybe; maybe not. There are a lot of different USB file transfer cables out there.

I guess i will go get a flash drive, seeing as how i can't get a clear answer to my questions.

Wombat sends me to a url for XP Pro ( my description clearly states XP Home ).

Razor2.3 tells me maybe yes maybe no, depending on ???

Forget it guys, i don't need the double talk.

If you are not getting the right answers, most likely you are not asking the right questions.

If you get a USB transfer cable (a waste of money in my opinion) you should get some software to set it up - you will not need to set up a network.

You could also get a crossover cable and create a network - which is a very simple process. There are instructions on this page: http://www.smallbusinesscomputing.c... The relevant instructions are in two paragraphs about 1/2 way down the page.

You can also use a fire-wire cable. I believe it requires a network setup as well, but I have never used it.

But, I would not recommend any of the above. With any of those cables they have very limited use and would sit around collecting dust most of the time. I would recommend a USB thumb drive or portable drive. You would get a lot more use out of those which would more than make up for the little bit of extra time it would take to transfer data between computers.

If I did have to select one of the transfer cables above, I'd suggest using a crossover cable. It sounds as if you are hesitant to try setting up a "network" due to inexperience. How do you plan on getting any experience if you aren't willing to try something new?

It's the same procedure for XP Home, as it is for XP Pro on setting up a network.

There isn't always a yes or no answer. Hopefully, you've learned that by now.
