What type of format did you perform? Quick or complete? Did you format FAT32 or NTFS? Was the old format the same?

First thing is to definitely not write anything to that partition.

There are some free recovery programs but they are limited. I THINK a live version of Linux will be able to access and copy the files.

Knoppix is one I am familiar with. Knoppix is freeware that fits on and runs from ONE CDR disk. It is a large download and you will need access to a computer with a burner.

You will need a place to copy the file to. USB flash, external, CDR or DVDR are all choices as is a network drive or another hard drive in the computer with the corrupted drive.

Google for Knoppix.

If you prefer you can buy a premade Knoppix CD for a few dollars. Google for that too.

If you want to try recovery software then I suggest you post a new thread asking about file recovery. ZAR is one that has a limit on the number of files you can recover with the free version.

Knoppix is free and there are no limits. Knoppix is NOT recovery software. It so happens that all versions of Linux use a different filing method than NTFS.

All that has happened to your drive at this point in time is that the file system has been deleted. All the files are still there. There is no longer any map to show where each file is located. Knoppix should be able to see the files anyway.

I mentioned copying. I recommend copying as opposed to cutting because if something were to go wrong while you have cut a file but haven't yet pasted it, you could lose that file or group of files.

So you need to keep track of what you copied and what you haven't so you are sure to copy all needed files and don't duplicate.

After you are all done copying and then verifying the copies are good then there are a couple of things you could try to restore the file system and thereby have the drive functional again.

If for some reason Knoppix doesn't work for you then you can always try a recovery program then. The free ones all have limits I think.

In the meantime, do NOT use the computer that you formatted. The more you use it, the less likely to recover your data.
