dat files are not graphic files. You can't convert that extension and have it display a picture.

Normally a dat file is a file used by the operating system, but I have seen some dat files that were pics or vids and this is what I did. If this is a picture, try one of 2 things. Make yourself a copy first in case you botch one up and try renaming it to jpeg. If that doesn't work, double click on it and when the dialog box comes up choose open with prog from list and choose windows pic and fax viewer. If it is a video clip try step 2 as above choosing instead windows media player. Failing that get vlc video player from videolan corp and try opening with that.
