.dat instead of .exe

whenever i try and download an executable file it is downloaded as a .dat file.

what causes this and how do i correct it.

it seems to do it in every executable file i attempt to download.

exception...i just downloaded adaware and it didn't do it.

here is one:
C:\Documents and Settings\StrobDoc\Desktop\zlsSetup_55_062_004.exe..dat

Are you using a download manager with trojan/script protection?

Some download managers will change the file type of a potencially dangerous file to give you a chance to analyze it. File types that are changed are exe, vbs, com, and other self running files.
