I am having keyboard problems. Every time I hit the t or 5 key I get t5. Every time I hit the y or 6 key I get y6. Every time I press the tab key I get a tab or `and tab and ` and when I press home the right-click menu pops up. Also I can not hold down the backspace key and have continuous deleting.

Under start programs, do you have any program that came with the keyboard? Or in control panel? Is this a new keyboard? And if it is did you install the drivers for it? Should be on a CD or Floppy.

It is not new and is already installed. It says the device is working properly even though it isn't

Are you in the habit of eating while at the keyboard. If so, turn they keyboard upside down and give it a really good vigorous shake.

If that failles, run it under the rap for a few minutes but make sure it is really dry before plugging it back in.

If that fails, but a new one, they are cheap enough.

Try to pick up the kbd about 5 inches from the desk and let it drop
called a drop test
also try to type at a command prompt
if it will type normally
windows issue
if not hardware
if the issue is only software go into safe mode and uninstall the driver from the device manager
(kbd may be listed more than once, if so uninstall all of them)

you're welcome

Laptop keyboards can be replaced. If its a Dell, surprisingly easy. However, they are not a cheap as a desktop keyboard.

This is a keyboard problem - nothing to do with software. The fact that it is producing two characters for one key press is and indication of that. No software error will do that.

You can go thru Dell if you don't like to mess with hardware even though it's easy.

If you want to do it yourself, You need to know what is the model of your Dell laptop. For example, if it's a 87 keys and it's Latitude CP , Latitude CPI , Latitude CPI A, or Latitude CPT V, look at this link http://www.impactcomputers.com/6807d.html. The cost is $24.95 plus S&H.

For instruction how to replace the keyboard, read the link below to get ideas http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Q_20825336.html
