xp should have put a driver in for your friends writer. What burning software are you trying to use with your writer? Go to device manager in control panel and see what the properties are under the cd writer. I bet you a donut that the driver is installed and the device is ready to use. You just need software to run it.

XP should be able to handle the firmware updater program. Just make sure you have the correct firmware

A failed firmware update will very likely make the drive worthless. As whether to use the 9x updater I won't recommend for it or against it. Under the hood (sorta speaking) Xp is very different then 9x. It very well could work. While it's true firmware is OS neutral the software to apply it may not be. If you can find a dos updater that would be the best way to go.

That drive wouldn't happen to be a rw-8438e? If it is and I'm not trying to be rude, that drive is pure garbage. I owned one and it lasted a year and a half. I had nothing but problems with it almost from the start. After searching google I found a page on Creatives site with twelve different pages of people complaining about this drive.

I turned my old 8438e into a tatoo gun LOL. Best one I ever made too. It's pretty bad when someone can read a post about a 8x4x32x creative burner and know the model# Shame on Creative for even making that drive...

I tried to run a creative 9x firmware update in xp and it wouldn't let me do it.

Since I have 98 on my other hard disk, I did it there.

In my case it was a creative 12x10x32.

It made a huge speed difference in xp when burning cd's. People say that xp makes adjustments so a firmware flash isn't needed.

But it did in my case.

you can take out your burner and put it in a 98 pc and flash it, or simply add a partition to your hd and install 98.
